Wednesday PM

Westleigh Quarry (Aggregates Industries)

Visit to a large carboniferous limestone quarry near to Tiverton. This visit will look at some of the challenges of operating a modern quarry to stringent environmental standards, maximising recovery of reserves and development of future resources.

Lee Moor China Clay & Secondary Aggregates (Sibelco and Aggregate Industries)

A visit to the largest China clay works on Dartmoor. The visit will include a tour of the quarry, clay production facilities as well as the secondary aggregate production plant which produces a range of aggregate products from waste derived from the China clay works.

Newton Abbot Ball Clay (Sibelco)

A visit to the globally important ball clay operations of Sibelco near to Newton Abbot. These sites produce high purity ceramic clays for use in sanitaryware, and are distributed globally. The visit will explore what makes these deposits so rare and of such importance to the ceramics industry.

Exeter Building Stones Tour

A wide range of building stones have been used in Exeter. We will explore the history of the use of different stones at different times across the city, from the Roman period to the 21st century and the buildings that have been constructed. The origins of the materials involved and their geological history will be covered and the social and economic influences on the use of stone overtime will be explored. Historic building conservation issues posed by different stones will be touched on. This is an ideal trip for those taking the train to Exeter as the route is within walking distance from the University.

Hemerdon Mine (Tungsten West)

A rare opportunity to visit a world class Tungsten-Tin deposit on our doorstep. The operators will provide a tour of the open pit, processing, and mine waste facilities to give a complete overview of this exciting development. Subjects such as ore geology, processing techniques, influence of commodity markets, and ESG will be covered.

Note : Maximum of 16 spaces available

Delegates will be expected to provide their own PPE and to get in touch with us if they have any concerns regarding access and mobility around any of the field trips.
